Historical Events That Shaped the State of Georgia


Georgia was named for King George II of England and admitted to statehood 2 January 1788. Its 59,441 square miles of area is bordered by the states of Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

The capitol of the Peach State is Atlanta, the state bird is the Brown Thrasher, the state flower is the Cherokee Rose, and the state tree is the Live Oak. The official state fish is the largemouth bass.

Georgia, consisting of 159 counties, is the nation's number 1 producer of peanuts, pecans, and peaches. Other agricultural products include poultry and eggs, cattle, hogs, dairy products, and vegetables. Industries that boost Georgia's economy include textiles and apparel, transportation equipment, food processing, paper products, chemical products, and electric equipment.

The population of Georgia in the year 2000 was 8,186,453. The current governor is Sonny Perdue.
